Fields of work and projects

The Department of Chemistry Education works in different levels of teaching research. The most important level is teaching itself: Teaching concepts are developed and tested in class or in the student laboratories Chemol and ChemOL²; this approach aims at curricular innovation of teaching. Currently, the topics of chemistry-related vocational orientation, computer-supported chemistry teaching and the integration of food chemistry content into chemistry teaching, as well as language-sensitive chemistry teaching and chemistry teacher training are being worked on. To test new concepts for lower and upper secondary schools, the new school laboratory ChemOL² was founded in 2016, which has seen an increase in school enquiries. Above all, doctoral students working in the field of curricular innovation of teaching use this platform to obtain data on the effectiveness of the conceptions. The second major area of work is the study of the professional knowledge of chemistry teachers in the areas already mentioned.
