Retinal ensemble coding

All visual information available to the brain is transmitted by ensembles of retinal ganglion cells. However, it is still largely unknown how this information is encoded. By combining multi-electrode recordings from the vertebrate retina (turtle, fish, mouse) with behavioral experiments, mathematical data analysis and model simulations, we are trying to find out, which coding strategies would enable the brain to detect and discriminate visual stimuli.
