Semester opening event
We invite all guest students and interested parties to join us for the start of the 2026 summer semester.
You can look forward to a welcome address from the University's Presidential Board and our traditional lecture, which this semester will be given by PD Dr Phillip Köker from the Institute of Social Sciences.
You will also receive lots of useful information about guest auditor studies and the various events on offer. Furthermore, the opening event afterwards offers the opportunity to get to know other guest students and interested parties over a coffee, to clarify open questions or to register for the various events.

Opening lecture
Is populism a threat to democracy?
by PD Dr Philipp Köker
Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Oldenburg
Populism - this term has been on everyone's lips not just since the presidential elections in the USA or the last federal elections. But what does it actually mean? Why have populist parties been celebrating ever greater success in recent years? And why do the media, academia, civil society and politicians repeatedly warn of the dangers of populism for our democracy?
The lecture sheds light on these and other questions by placing the rise of populist parties and actors in a wider context and explaining why many people feel attracted to populist promises right now. It shows how populist forces can undermine democracy - even if they do not come to power - and what citizens and politicians can do to counter these dangers.
