Gender equality/diversity in the Planning and Development Unit

The University’s Central Equality Plan

With the Central Gender Equality Plan process, the University of Oldenburg has systematised its gender equality work and anchored important processes. In a highly participatory process, a new equality plan is drawn up every 3-4 years in order to focus the university's equality work and set out specific measures to achieve the goals.

New gender equality plan 2024 adopted

Implementation of the measures can begin

The further development of the Gender Equality Plan is complete: The Central Gender Equality Plan 2024 was adopted by mutual agreement between the University Senate and the Presidential Board of the UOL and is now entering the implementation phase. Among other things, the university aims to increase the proportion of female professors to 35 per cent by 2027.

The Gender Equality Plan was developed by a working group of the Gender Equality Commission. The plan contains four thematic priorities with targeted measures and thus builds on the previous plan. Implementation is the responsibility of the relevant organisational units and runs until December 2027.

A print version and other supporting materials will be distributed to the implementing organisational units. The Gender Equality Plan 2024 is available here as a PDF.

Central equality plan 2020

In February 2020, the Central Gender Equality Plan 2020 was adopted by consensus by the University Senate and the Presidential Board of the UOL, marking the first time a gender equality plan has been adopted at the university. The Gender Equality Plan was developed by a working group of the Gender Equality Commission.

At the heart of the equality plan was a catalogue of 124 measures. The equality measures were the responsibility of both central and decentralised organisational units and Schools and will be implemented by the end of 2022. The Central Gender Equality Plan 2020 also included an inventory of existing structures, regulations and programmes relating to gender equality as well as a comprehensive analysis of strengths and weaknesses, which primarily depicted the gender ratio in various status groups and committees.

The Gender Equality Plan 2020 set four priorities for gender equality work at UOL:

  • Gender-sensitive university culture
  • Promotion of young female academics
  • Recruitment of female academics
  • Diversity and anti-discrimination strategy

The equality measures included, among other things

  • Standards for decentralised gender equality work (#2)
  • Gender equality network (#3)
  • Gender equality monitoring of doctoral candidates and academic staff with doctorates (#6-7)
  • Mentoring programme for female early career researchers (#59)
  • Active Recruitment Centre, handout and training on active recruitment (#76-79)
  • Guideline on gender-sensitive language (#110)
  • Diversity strategy (#118)

Evaluation of the Central Gender Equality Plan 2020

In July 2023, the university management approved and submitted the final report on the implementation of the Central Gender Equality Plan 2020 (only accessible internally). This report describes the coordination and management of implementation, assesses the achievement of the targets, analyses the progress made in relation to the ten fields of action and four priorities of the equality plan and presents the final status of the individual measures. With the submission of this report, the implementation of the University's first centralised equality plan has been successfully completed.
