Master's double degree programme

The term "double degree programme" generally means that you are studying two (usually admission-free) degree programmes in parallel, e.g. you are enrolled on a Master's degree programme in teaching and a Master's degree programme in history. How such a special format can look for the Master's degree programme in the subject of History is described here in brief.

Master's double degree programme at the Institute of History: Why?

Are you not quite sure what academic appointment you would like to take up after your studies? You don't yet know whether you want to go into teaching immediately after graduating? The supplementary master's degree programme in History gives you the opportunity to delve deeper into research questions in history, study abroad for a semester at one of our partner universities or complete a specialised internship abroad. In addition to practical professional opportunities, the master's degree programme also opens up the option of a doctorate and thus a few years of independent research with other young academics. After a doctoral phase or professional experience in university or science-related institutions, the double master's programme still gives you the opportunity to complete a traineeship and enter the teaching profession.

Master's double degree programme: Who is it suitable for?

In the subject of History, a double degree programme is particularly suitable for students of the M.Ed. Gymnasium who would like to expand the rather limited amount of specialised content in the teacher training programme and sharpen their qualification profile with two degrees (M.Ed. and M.A.).

The Institute supports this double degree programme with special recognition regulations, i.e. some credits (two specialised modules of 9 CP each and the Master's thesis, see below) can be credited to both degree programmes. With foresighted planning, it is thus possible to complete two degree programmes in a manageable time frame (approx. 6 semesters).

Note: It is also possible to combine two Master of Arts degree programmes. If you are interested, please contact the subject's academic advisor to find out if there are any overlaps for possible recognition.

Master's double degree programme in concrete terms: enrolment, recognition of achievements

  • The application deadline depends on the requirements for the individual degree programmes, i.e. for winter semester 2023/24 you must apply by 15 August for the M.Ed. Gym and by 30 September for the M.A.. You do not have to submit both applications at the same time!
  • Enrolment in two degree programmes does not change the amount of the semester fee.
  • If you have detailed questions about the enrolment modalities for a double degree programme, please contact the Admissions office.
