As part of the fourth round of dialogue (2024 - 2026), the Ministry of Science and Culture, the State University Conference and the State Conference of Gender Equality Officers at Universities in Lower Saxony are focusing on the topic of intersectional gender equality work. HRK: Measures against abuse of power at universities

Standing Committee "Governance"

"Exploiting relationships of trust and dependency, for example in the context of academic qualifications or in hierarchically organised work processes, cannot be tolerated and must be regarded as a violation of the work and service obligations of university staff," explains HRK President Professor Dr Walter Rosenthal. Current cases of sexualised abuse of power towards students and qualifying academics in particular show that a continuous review and, if necessary, expansion of existing protective measures is necessary. The HRK's Standing Commission on Governance will develop proposals for further measures.

Women's opportunities increase too slowly

Across all types of higher education institutions, we have seen different developments in gender equality in recent years, depending on the level of qualification. The gender ratio for doctorates has hardly changed over the past ten years. There appears to be a ceiling effect here, which gives women fewer opportunities than men. In the case of professorships, the pace of equalisation of opportunities is again as slow as it was at the beginning of the millennium.

Equal opportunities and sustainability - a social task and also a university mission?

International Women's Day 2022 at the UOL

"The empowerment and participation of women and girls has a leverage effect on economic growth and development and is not only equitable, but also indispensable in economic and social terms"(Agenda 2030). What was anchored here in the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals with regard to the three major sectors - ecology, economy and social affairs - is increasingly also reaching universities. Digitalisation and educational issues, environmental protection and economic compatibility and, last but not least, day-to-day administrative activities - to name just a few of the fields of research and action at a university today - often come into contact with sustainability issues. These are often located between the poles of resource efficiency and social justice, both of which also touch on the cross-cutting issue of equal opportunities.

On the occasion of this year's International Women's Day, perspectives and opportunities for networking both cross-cutting issues in the various university fields of action were presented and discussed. Prof Dr Ralph Bruder, President of the University of Oldenburg, gave the welcoming address.

Reading for International Women's Day 2019

Milestones such as the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage are important reminders of what seems so self-evident today. International Women's Day, which is celebrated in many parts of the world, raises awareness of the situation of women - economically, socially and politically - once a year. When it comes to living together at a university, the issue of equal rights, equal opportunities and equal participation is a daily challenge that indicates what still needs to be done and determines whether we move away from the goals of a living democracy or move closer to them and consolidate them. To mark International Women's Day 2019, we organised a reading at the University of Oldenburg with a potpourri of speeches, both given and not given, which Stephanie Trapp, actress at the Oldenburg State Theatre, among others, presented to us: "Was ich schon immer mal loswerden wollte...".
