Enthusiastically celebrated when it was published in the USA in 19 71\, the novel is still only very hesitantly perceived in the FRG and its disturbing potential appears to have been brought under control in most in terpretations - as satire\, grotesque or a variant of Jewish humour\, it b ecomes connectable for literary and cultural scholars. In contrast\, I wou ld like to show that this comedy of mistaken identity "about the Nazi who then becomes a Jew"\, with its quotations from German children's and house hold tales\, its vulgar psychology as well as its chumminess with a fictit ious German reader\, corrodes the problem of self-description and the prom ises of identity that have always been associated with it from within. The problem of identity\, which is always reflected in the autobiographies of survivors\, as well as the horrific abyss between perpetrators and victim s\, appears in Hilsenrath's work in the form of a thoroughly shocking tras h novel\, in which the unspeakability and "banality of evil" become visibl e in their obscene entanglement.
