Prof. Dr Baptiste Allard from Le Havre visits the Hanse Law School
7 June 2024
This week (June 2024), Prof. Dr Baptiste Allard (centre), Professor of Private Law at our partner university, Le Havre Normandie, and liaison officer for cooperation between the University of Le Havre and the University of Oldenburg, was a guest in Oldenburg.
On Wednesday, the two generations met for dinner together. Prof. Dr Allard met Prof. Dr em. Götz Frank (left), who, together with Prof. Patrice Gélard – recipient of the University of Oldenburg’s Medal of Honour – established the co-operation between the universities in the 1990s.
Thanks to Erasmus funding under the ‘Teaching Mobility’ scheme, Prof. Dr Allard was able to deliver three lectures on the ‘Comparative and European Law’ degree programme in the field of marine and maritime law and to highlight the specific links between these areas of law and contract law and European law.
The aim is to breathe new life into the co-operation and to establish the dual Bachelor’s programme under the umbrella of the Hanse Law School, headed by Hanse Law School Director Prof. Dr Christine Godt (right).
Strengthening co-operation between the HLS and the Université du Havre
15 April 2024
As part of her visit to the Université du Havre in Normandy, France, Hanse Law School Director Prof. Dr Christine Godt (3rd from left) signed an agreement on 19 March 2024 together with Pierre Barthelemy (1st from left), Jean-Michel Jude (2nd from left), Morgane Chevé (2nd from the right) and Baptiste Allard (1st from the right), a ‘Letter of Intent’ to introduce a new dual Bachelor’s programme between the ‘Comparative and European Law’ degree programme at the University of Oldenburg and the ‘Licence Droit classique’ degree programme at the Université du Havre.
Both universities are delighted that this will enable them to strengthen their long-standing academic and friendly co-operation and to provide students on both degree programmes with an understanding of German and French law.

Once again this year, Prof. Dr Sjef van Erp (Professor Emeritus at Maastricht University) and Prof. Dr C. Godt (Head of the HLS at the University of Oldenburg) jointly led the seminar ‘Comparative Property Law’. The participants expressed their enthusiasm: “The seminar offers an insight into the diverse perspectives on property regulations in different legal systems.”
Prof. van Erp is highly regarded: with his clear examples from the field of data protection law, he manages to make the course engaging by addressing highly topical issues whilst at the same time conveying the fundamental principles.

HLS re-accredited for a further 7 years!
(ac) Hanse Law School has been re-accredited for the next 7 years!
Following a decision by the Accreditation Commission of the Agency for Quality Assurance (AQAS e.V.), the Bachelor of Laws in ‘Comparative and European Law’ and the Master of Laws in ‘Transnational Law’ have been re-accredited for the next seven years.
As part of the accreditation process, the Agency’s assessors evaluated the degree programmes in terms of organisation and administration, study feasibility, programme profile and career prospects. The report incorporated an evaluation of the self-assessment report prepared by HLS staff, interviews with students, alumni, teaching staff and programme leads, and the impressions of the Universities of Bremen and Oldenburg regarding infrastructure and library facilities.
The assessors praised the international profile of the degree programmes and the integration of German, European and international law within the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes. In particular, the close co-operation with the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in the form of the dual Master’s programme, as well as the planned implementation of an integrated dual Bachelor’s programme offering the opportunity to obtain the ‘civiel effect’, help to give Hanse Law School a profile that is unique across Europe.
The AQAS e.V. agency certified that the two degree programmes at Hanse Law School are fully accessible, offering excellent prospects for graduation and careers.

COVID-19 and its impact on the HLS
(ac) The current COVID-19 situation is affecting not only social interaction but also academic life. However, the lecturers at Hanse Law School have successfully adapted to digital teaching.
In March 2020, the vice-chancellors of the partner universities in Oldenburg and Bremen agreed to conduct the 2020 summer semester digitally: no face-to-face teaching in lecture theatres or seminar rooms, and no written exams with students present. These new teaching conditions place high demands not only on lecturers but also on students.
However, thanks to the small groups of no more than 35 students, Hanse Law School is able to organise its courses as interactive digital seminars. Consequently, only the large joint courses with the State Examination degree programme take the form of recorded presentations or ‘self-study’ courses. Particularly in times of ‘social distancing’, this ensures that interaction between lecturers and students remains possible; questions can be asked in person and answered directly. As a result, effective teaching and learning remain feasible, and motivation does not suffer quite as much as is observed in other formats.
This ‘digital face-to-face teaching’ is made possible by the fantastic support from the University of Oldenburg, whose Computing Science department is exceptionally well-equipped. The university provides us with our own video conferencing tool that meets the requirements of modern teaching and data protection.
‘Breakout rooms’ allow us to organise group work online and collate results; this means that discussion is possible even ‘from the comfort of one’s own home’.
The feedback from students at Hanse Law School has been positive. Whilst there were a few technical hurdles to overcome at the start of the transition to a digital teaching format, these have now been surmounted thanks to growing experience.
Our students currently studying abroad – a key component of our Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes – have been particularly affected by the current COVID-19 crisis. However, together with our Erasmus coordinators, we are managing to find individual solutions for students whose host universities are also increasingly relying on digital formats.
Thanks to the excellent cooperation between the Universities of Oldenburg and Bremen within the Hanse Law School, we are able to provide students with up-to-date information regarding the running of the digital semester and to respond swiftly to the ever-changing requirements in teaching and administration.
