Panel II

Panel II: Queer temporalities, film and movement|Temporalities, film and movement

please scroll down for English version

In recent years, discussions of temporality as a structuring system of order have become a central area of theorising in queer studies. Here, temporal logics are shown to be effective, temporality is emphasised as a powerful structure in relation to gender, desire and sexualities, and last but not least, critiques and interventions are developed with regard to the normative aspects of temporalities. In these analyses, media become objects of questions of standardisation, but also mediators of utopias and dialogues through time, disruptions and radical counter-positions. In the panel, questions of temporality in queer studies will be exemplified using the example of movement history(ies) and film. What forms of intervention does queer studies propose in its turn towards temporality and how do these relate to the tradition of telling movement history(ies) on film?

Based on the fundamental observation that temporal structuring defines film as a time-based medium 'par excellence', the aim is to analyse the ways in which standstill, seriality, repetition, duration or linearity have become effective through the medium of film. With regard to the possibility of telling queer movement stories in the medium of film, the central question of the panel is: How strongly are queer movement stories tied to their cinematic constitution in relation to narratives of temporality? Is it possible to create a queer temporality in film, or are queer movement films also determined by the normative temporalities of cinematic narratives? What alternative drafts of movement history and its cinematic forms can be found in queer studies, which films also work on movement history(ies) via radicalised concepts of time? And what role do intermedial aesthetic strategies play in the thematisation of time and temporalities in relation to film?

Temporalities, film and movement

Temporality has become a major topic within queer studies in recent years. Discussions about temporal logics have shown them to be effective and expose how temporality functions as a powerful structure in terms of gender, desire and sexualities. Furthermore, critiques of and interventions into the normative aspects of temporalities are currently being developed. These analyses question how media relate to issues of standardisation. Different media have, throughout the ages, served to convey utopian visions, facilitate dialogues, create interferences and pose radical counter-positions. This panel will explore some paradigmatic questions of temporality within queer studies, focusing in particular on film and histories of queer movements. What kinds of interventions do queer analyses of temporalities suggest? How do these interventions relate to the tradition of relating the histories of different movements through film?

Starting from the observation that temporal structures define film as a time-based medium 'par excellence', the panel seeks to analyse how particular modes of time such as standstill, serialisation, repetition, duration and linearity have had a long-lasting influence thanks to the medium of film.

When asking into the possible ways of telling the hi/stories of queer movements with the medium of film, other central questions of this panel might include: How strongly are these histories of queer movements tied to their cinematic structure being based on temporal narratives? What possibilities are there for creating queer temporalities within film? And to what extent are documentaries that deal with queer movements also determined by cinematic conventions and the normative temporalities of cinematic narratives? How might the histories of movements and their cinematic forms be conceptualised in other ways? And can alternative examples be found in queer studies? Which films make use of radical conceptions of time in order to rework how the stories of queer movements are narrated? What relevance do intermedial aesthetic strategies have in tackling issues of time and temporality in film?
