Panel III

Panel III: Trans*Media - Trans*Bodies

please scroll down for English version

Naturalised ideas of bisexuality and a hetero-sexual imaginary continue to shape not only everyday cultures, but also art and science - even in the fields of natural sciences and biology. From a trans*queer perspective, this raises epistemological and political-activist questions about how ways of life and existence that do not fit into the order of heteronormative binary gender can be described, emphasised and legitimised at all. In relation to these questions, media and in particular intermedial configurations that question the primacy of seeing and the visual play an important role, both on a theoretical and on the level of political-activist strategies.

The panel will discuss the possibilities and limits of trans*queer art and aesthetics to rework cultural-social power and domination relations: How are media specifically deployed and used to criticise heteronormative bisexuality and make trans*queer ways of life and existence more conceivable and livable? In what way do multi- and transmedia performances in particular open up new forms of perception and thought? How and where do cultural and artistic projects emerge that can contribute to the emancipation of marginalised people? And to what extent are new forms of standardisation and regulation of gender and sexuality emerging that need to be critically reflected upon? The panel will explore these questions using the example of current trans*queer negotiations of gender, sexuality and their interventions in the private and public sphere.

Trans*Media - Trans*Bodies

Naturalised perceptions of a binary sex/gender system and a heterosexualized imagination still shape quotidian cultures as well as arts and science, even extending into the realms of the natural sciences and biology. From a trans*queer perspective, this provokes both epistemological and activist-political questions. For example, how can modes of living and existence that do not fit into the order of heteronormativity be described, asserted and legitimised? Moreover, medial and intermedial configurations, especially those challenging the primacy of sight and the visual, play a crucial role with respect to questions like these.

The panel discusses the possibilities and limitations of trans*queer art and aesthetics to transform cultural and social power relations: How are different media used to criticise the heteronormative binary sex/gender system and to make trans*queer modes of life thinkable, imaginable and livable? In which ways do multi- and transmedia performances in in particular open up new forms of thinking? How and where do cultural and artistic projects emerge that can contribute to the emancipation of marginalised subjects? Which new forms of normalisation and regulation (might) result from such practices, which themselves need to be critically reflected upon? These questions will be examined by discussing negotiations of sex, gender and sexuality in the field of current trans*queer cultures or cultural productions.
