In computer networks (the World Wide Web, email, Wi-Fi, etc.), certificates govern fundamental aspects:

• Encryption of data traffic
• Authentication (the remote party is who they claim to be)
• Data integrity (nothing is altered on the way from A to B)

From time to time, when visiting websites, connecting to a Wi-Fi network (including Eduroam/Easyroam) or receiving emails, you may encounter warnings regarding certificates of all kinds.
