ICBM Postgraduate Symposium / PhD Days
ICBM-PhD days
The ICBM PhD Days are a platform for ICBM PhD students to meet and present their research to their fellow PhD students. The PhD days are aimed at PhD students working in the field of marine biology and ecology, geochemistry and analytics, physics and modelling as well as related fields at the ICBM. It takes place twice a year, in spring at the ICBM in Wilhelmshaven and in autumn at the ICBM in Oldenburg. It is an international conference where all PhDs have the opportunity to give talks and exchange information about their projects and research methods. Furthermore they offer space to share scientific and personal challenges and to develop an interdisciplinary network.
International networking event
The PhD days are also an institutional networking event, making new contacts with other PhDs in the field of science or related fields and to welcome new ICBM PhD students. All ICBM PhD students are welcome, talks are held in English language. The students themselves decide, when they want to give a talk or discuss about a method or a paper or present their topics during a poster session. At least every PhD student has to present two times at a PhD day during his or her doctoral period.
Organisation
The ICBM PhD-Day is organized from PhD students for PhDs, with a rotating ICBM PhD organization committee.
Aims of the PhD Day
The ICBM PhD Days provide an opportunity to
- Experience a variety of scientific expertise in all ICBM working groups and present your own work,
- Develop a network between ICBM working groups at both ICBM locations and find contact persons/ ICBM working groups for interdisciplinary questions of your own project,
- Discuss situation of PhD students in modern times (perspectives, problems, solutions), and
- Have a good time together with your fellow ICBM PhD students, a get-together with other ICBM PhD students
Due to the Corona pandemic, PhD days could not take place for certain years, alternatively the format "ICBM PhDs: Connected" was offered.
Consent of Photo and Video Recordings
At ICBM PhD days photos and videos will be taken. A selection of the footage will afterwards be displayed on the website of ICBM or in our ICBM Alumni Newsletter.
By entering the event location on campus of University of Oldenburg exhibitors and visitors agree that photos and/or video recordings can be taken of them – including group and individual portraits – and can be used and published as mentioned above.

ICBM–PhD–Colloquium (IPC)
The ICBM–PhD–Colloquium (short: IPC) is a get-together of PhD students which are working at the ICBM. The IPC is an international platform where all PhDs can meet for giving test talks, exchange information about their projects and talk about challenges or methods during their PhD. The IPC is also an institutional networking event, making new contacts with other PhDs in the field of science or related fields. The IPC was replaced by the ICBM PhD Day.
