Optical measurement techniques are an essential element of modern autonomous observation methods, as is the case in the international Argo program. In addition to the core parameters temperature, conductivity and pressure (also known as Core-Argo), radiometric, photometric and fluorometric sensors have become established, which are used to record biogeochemical parameters (known as BGC-Argo). The aim of this project is to enhance these existing measurement methods on BGC-Argo floats by a combined analysis of the different bio-optical sensors and to develop advanced quality assurance mechanisms. This will provide new possibilities for the acquisition of multi- and hyperspectral radiometric as well as fluorometric and backscatter data, which in particular allow the measurement of algae as well as suspended and dissolved material. Additionally, the use of this combination of sensors offers the option to derive further parameters and to perform statistical comparisons between all parameters, which provide the basis for the development of new quality and data management procedures. Furthermore, applications of these floats in the Baltic Sea and the North Atlantic are planned, which will help to complete the spatial coverage of these regions, which directly contributes to the objectives of the Argo program.
