The prize, named after the renowned German oceanographer Otto Krümmel (1854 – 1912), is awarded to young oceanographers for outstanding bachelor’s theses. It is meant to further encourage and motivate the young scientists for their professional career. Oldenburg. Hanne Marie Banko-Kubis accepted the Otto Krümmel Promotional Award today for her Bachelor thesis on carbon dioxide exchange in Norwegian coastal waters. The prize, named after the renowned German oceanographer Otto Krümmel (1854 – 1912), is awarded to young oceanographers for outstanding bachelor’s theses. The awardee was supervised by Dr. Mariana Ribas Ribas, scientific member of the research group Sea Surface at ICBM, who also gave a speech in honour of Banko Kubis during the awards ceremony. She emphesized the excellent work of Banko-Kubis who had shown a much higher degree of commitment during her work on the thesis than usual. One important new result of the awarded work is that Norwegian fjords might act as an important sink for the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.

Banko-Kubis wants to continue her scientific career now by studying for a Master’s degree at the University of Oldenburg.

Original title of the Bachelor’s thesis: „In situ CO2 fluxes in Norwegian coastal areas. Evaluating in situ estuarine and oceanic gas transfer velocities and their relation to wind speed and turbulence“
