City of science

At the University of Oldenburg, many working groups deal with energy saving, energy efficiency and energy from renewable sources in an interdisciplinary manner. Computing Science is working on these challenges, in particular on the following topics: Modelling, simulation and improvement of electricity management as well as analysis and use of the huge amounts of information generated by decentralised producers and consumers (data stream management systems). A small impression is given: Software agents for the energy supply Bild

2008

Environmental Informatics students were once again successful in 2008. They received the prize for their work "Diem - A Tool for Modeling and Optimisation of Residential Electricity Consumption" at the EnviroInfo conference.

Every year, the GI's Environmental Informatics Committee awards the Environmental Informatics Prize for Environmental Applications to students. Submitted projects must demonstrate the use of information and communication technologies to solve environmental problems or generally demonstrate the contribution of ICT to sustainable development.

Environmental informatics prize for Oldenburg students

The Oldenburg project "ORISS - WWW-based carpooling service" has been selected from seven applications for this year's Environmental Informatics Prize for student work by the "Computing Science in Environmental Protection" committee of the German Informatics Society (Gesellschaft für Computing Science e.V.). The prize, endowed with 1,000 euros, was presented on 24 September 2003 at the EnviroInfo 2003 conference in Cottbus, where Oldenburg Computing Science student Simon Giesecke presented the project. Together with Giesecke, a total of 19 Computing Science students and their supervisors Gerriet Reents, Dr Ute Vogel and Prof. Dr Michael Sonnenschein were delighted to receive the award for a total of more than two years' work. The results of ORISS directly benefit the University of Oldenburg: the work forms the basis of the CarPooling project funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation to set up an Internet-based carpooling system for members of the University of Oldenburg. From the winter semester onwards, it will offer the numerous commuters, staff and students alike, the opportunity to get to their daily work or study events easily, cheaply and in an environmentally friendly way. When arranging car pools online, individual wishes regarding the route and passengers are taken into account. In addition to convenience, flexibility and cost savings, minimising the total distance travelled is also an important optimisation goal. Another plus: the carpooling service is free of charge.

Oldenburg graduate wins Bremen engineering prize

Oldenburg. Computing Science graduate Michael Malachinski from Oldenburg was today awarded the "Bremen Engineering Prize of the VDI" for his Diplom thesis. This prize is awarded annually by the Bremen branch of the "Association of German Engineers" for two Diplom theses written by graduates of the five universities in Bremen, Oldenburg and Emden. Malachinski wrote his Diplom thesis at the University of Oldenburg in the Department of Environmental Informatics headed by Prof Dr Michael Sonnenschein. He developed a user interface for an ecological simulation system. His work is a component of the research project "SimWild", an ecological research project of the Oldenburg computer science institute OFFIS and the Environmental Research Centre Leipzig-Halle GmbH (UFZ). The aim of the project is to utilise findings from theoretical ecology for practical application. To this end, the UFZ has developed a simulation model that can be used to calculate how many wild animals are killed by human disturbances (such as road traffic) in a study area. This allows existing environmental hazards to be assessed on the one hand and alternative interventions (e.g. different routes for a road) to be ecologically evaluated on the other. The user interface developed by Malachinski enables ecologists, species conservation officers and landscape planners to use the model in practical nature conservation.
