On Sunday, 21st August 2022, we will explore the mudflats of Dangast together. The tour will be accompanied by an experienced tour guide and takes place in English.
Mudflat hiking – Wattwandern, as we call it in German – is a very typical thing to do on the coast lines of North-West Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark. When the water leaves the shore during low tide, the so-called mudflats come into view: muddy soil with an ecosystem and life of its own. Large parts of the Wadden Sea off the Dutch, Danish and German coasts have even been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009.
For the mudflat hike/ walk you need to be able to walk through the mudflats for about 2.5 hours. Normal basic fitness is sufficient. We are not climbing mountains, but hiking through flat soil. Please wear flat, laced trainers that can get dirty. There is also the possibility to buy special shoes, so-called "beachies", for 14.99€ from the tour guide – Since the tour guide needs to arrange this in advance, please send us an email for your order. We also recommend sun protection such as sunscreen, hat etc. and long clothing if necessary as it can be windier than on the mainland. A google image search of the term Wattwanderung may give you some fashion inspiration!
We will take the train from Oldenburg to Varel and then a bus to Dangast (beach) – the whole journey takes 50 minutes. We have 1.5 hours of free time at the beach of Dangast before the mudflat walk starts at 2pm. During this time you can roam around the beach area and eat some lunch (there are a few cafés and restaurants by the beach but you can bring your own lunch box).
