Prof. Dr. Kim M. Baines
After receiving her BSc from St. Mary’s University in 1982 and her PhD from the University of Toronto in 1987, Kim Baines spent one year as a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada postdoctoral fellow at the University of Dortmund, Germany. She then joined the University of Western Ontario (now, Western University) in 1988 where she is now Professor of Chemistry. Her research focuses on the synthesis and reactivity of low coordinate, main group molecules with new and interesting bonding paradigms. She was awarded the inaugural Polanyi Prize from the Government of Ontario (1988), the Clara Benson Award from the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC) (2002), the Florence Bucke Prize from Western (2004) and a Humboldt Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (2015) in Germany for her contributions to research. She has served as Chair of Chemistry at Western (2005-2014), Chair of the Canadian Council of University Chemistry Chairs (2005-2007), on the NSERC Grant Selection Committee for Organic and Inorganic Chemistry (2002-05), as Group Chair for the NSERC Chemistry Evaluation Group (2008-2011) and on the CSC Board of Directors (2005-2008). She was recently awarded the Montreal Medal for her contributions to the profession of chemistry in Canada and is the incoming Vice President for the Canadian Society of Chemistry.
