Project group EUSTEL - Decision Support System for Technology Enhanced Learning
EUSTEL project group
Students are often confronted with the problem of identifying which courses or modules they can or must take on the basis of their respective examination regulations. This is particularly true when studying a minor or applied subject. This can result in longer study times or an increased demand for counselling. At the same time, lecturers and committees must provide a range of courses and modules that meets demand as closely as possible. However, this is associated with the problem that very little information is available about future demand in order to forecast it correctly. Tools to alleviate these problems are not yet sufficiently available in the area of so-called Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL).
The aim of this project group is therefore to design and realise a decision support system (EUS) that contributes to solving the above-mentioned problems. It is intended to support students in deciding which courses they should take in the coming semesters based on their respective examination regulations. Teachers and committees should also be supported in realising a range of courses that meets demand. For both requirements, it is necessary to formalise the corresponding examination regulations (semantically).
Possible application scenarios for the EUS are, for example, that students can visualise the (further) course of their studies and list only those courses or modules that are relevant to them. (?What can/must I still take??) It is particularly interesting to see the consequences of possible subject or specialisation choices on the possibilities for continuing their studies. (?What can/must I take if I choose XY???) From the point of view of the lecturers or committees, possible application scenarios consist of forecasting, based on the anonymised data of all students, when demand by students can be expected for certain courses. (?What should we offer when??)
