About us

Main research areas of the Institute for English and American Studies include Anglophone cultural and literary studies, socio- and psycholinguistic aspects of the English language, and English didactics. Specific research areas focused on by the English Literature working group include ‘science narratives’ and ‘literature and science studies’, as well as the spectrum of conceptions of literature and functions of narrative within the framework of a history of discourses.

Your tasks

  • Carrying out research in the field of English Literature including research for the purpose of obtaining a Ph.D. degree in Literary Studies at Oldenburg (preferably in one of the following research areas: Literature and Science Studies; Literature and Other Discourses; Narrative Theory and the Cultural History of Narrative)
  • Teaching according to the teaching regulations of the federal state of Lower Saxony (LVVO), currently two hours per week, i.e. one course per week
  • Contributing to research projects of the chair and working group (in the form of research assistance or by supporting the organisation of workshops, conferences, project applications etc.)

Your profile

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or equivalent diploma in the field of English or Anglophone Studies (or in a related subject) with a focus on English literary (and cultural) studies
  • Research interest or research experience in the field of English Literatures
  • Native or near-native knowledge of English (C1)
  • A sufficiently wide background and command of analytical skills in literary and cultural studies for introductory teaching

 

Desirable Competencies

  • Demonstrated familiarity with one or several of the following research areas: Literature and Science Studies; Literature in the context of other discourses; Conceptions and theories of literature; Cultural forms and contexts of narrative; Historical and cultural situatedness of literary texts and practices; History, forms and functions of close reading.
  • Draft Outline of a possible Ph.D. project (preferably, with reference to one of the following fields of research: Literature and Science Studies; discursive history of literature; narrative theory and historical and cultural functions of narrative)
