Supporting Research - Evaluation and Effectiveness Research

The Evaluation and Effectiveness Research Department focuses on providing academic support for projects Research-Based Learning in Focus Plus – FLiF+ (Forschungbasiertes Lernen im Fokus Plus) and Research-Oriented Teaching Plus – FoL+ (Forschungsorientierte Lehre Plus). Furthermore, the department provides support for research-based learning at the University of Oldenburg and examines the impact of such forms of teaching and learning.

General questions about research-based learning are part of all internal evaluations. Additionally, there are special questionnaires for students and instructors that target specifically this type of teaching and learning.  Results are used for further improving of teaching and learning formats, for quality assurance and for highlighting research-based learning as a feature of the education profile forschen@studium at the University of Oldenburg.

Furthermore, we cooperate closely with the supporting research programme ForschenLernen and AG Forschendes Lernen infunded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.  We also collaborate with the Standing Group on Research-based/Research-oriented Learning in the German Association for Didactics in Higher Education (dghd- "German Association for Educational and Academic Staff Development in Higher Education”).

The Evaluation and Effectiveness Research Department is home to the editorial board of the Working Paper series of the dghd Working Group Learning Through Research.

Quality Assurance

Having each student complete an entire research cycle at least once apart from the final thesis – this is the goal that the University of Oldenburg pursues with its teaching approach forschen@studium.

To achieve this, the FLiF+ project Quality Assurance is tasked with long-term implementation of research-based teaching in university-wide but also school-specific processes, procedures and mechanisms.

In terms of development, quality assurance operates on several levels.

Quality assurance in classes

  • Workshops on teaching in higher education for instructors
  • Course evaluation with questions about research-based learning
  • BGathering reports on courses involving research-based learning for a compilation of good-practice examples and for other purposes.

Quality assurance in degree programs

  • Identifying research-based courses by analysing module descriptions.

Quality assurance in projects

  • External monitoring of the project by the Central Evaluation and Accreditation Agency - Zentrale Evaluations- und Akkreditierungsagentur (ZEvA)
  • Regular reports submitted to project leaders and funders
  • Regular progress reports and controlling compliance with project goals.

NETWORKS AND EXTERNAL PARTNERS

The FLiF+ project is part of relevant networks for research-based learning (for instance dghd’s Working Group Learning Through Research) and cooperates closely with relevant research projects of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. On the regional level, the FLiF+ project is part of the Initiative for Quality Teaching in Lower Saxony.

INITIATIVE FOR QUALITY TEACHING IN LOWER SAXONY

The projects funded through Quality Pact for Teaching by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research have organized into a network in Lower Saxony. The network meets regularly. Represented through the FLiF+ project, the University of Oldenburg was part of this network from the very beginning and it hosted the network meeting in February 2018.

DGHD’S WORKING GROUP LEARNING THROUGH RESEARCH

At the yearly dghd conference in 2014, fourteen affiliates of ongoing programs and projects – including representatives of the University of Oldenburg – founded the Working Group Learning Through Research.
Working group’s core activities are conferences and workshops, as well further work in smaller groups focusing on specific topics. Click here for further information (hier,in German only).

EVALUATION AND RESEARCH PROJECT FORSCHENLERNEN

ForschenLernen (Learn(to)Research) is a joint project of the Humboldt University in Berlin, the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Many other German universities (including the University of Oldenburg) and universities of applied science are cooperating partners in this project. ForschenLernen examines the implementation and effects of learning through research in projects that are funded through the Quality Pact for Teaching (Qualitätspakt Lehre).

INTERNATIONAL NETWORK

On an international level, the University of Oldenburg cooperates with the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR, USA), the British Conference on Undergraduate Research (BCUR) and the Australasian Council on Undergraduate Research (ACUR). Current activities revolve largely around organizing the 2nd World Congress on Undergraduate Research.
