Information about the project

In the research project Live.Music.Experience, we are investigating the relationship between musicians and audience at live concerts. What makes a successful concert? And what role do sound, rhythm, rhymes or lines of text play in this? How important is the credibility of musicians, their personality and their closeness to the audience? To answer these questions, we attend concerts ourselves and conduct interviews with other concert-goers.

Information for interview partners

Through the interviews, we want to find out more about the impressions of concertgoers. What does a "good" concert mean to them? How do they experience the artist/band and which songs have a special meaning for them? What impressions do they take home with them? As such impressions can be very different (and this is exactly what we want to explore), no special prior knowledge is required for the interviews.

They take place in places where you can talk undisturbed (e.g. a room at the local school) or as an online meeting. The questions concern personal impressions of the concert, the artists, their music and their work. If necessary, video and audio clips are shown to remind people of the concerts and make the conversations more lively. The interviews are recorded and then written down. All data is completely pseudonymised so that the identity of the interviewees is protected. This means that we change names and possibly also places and academic appointments so that the statements made cannot be attributed to any individual. All interviewees receive a transcript of their interview in order to point out any errors in the transcript. Consent to participate in the interview can be withdrawn at any time without incurring any disadvantages. At the end of the research project, all contact details and the audio recordings will be deleted. The anonymised transcripts will be deleted ten years after the end of the research project. Until then, they will be stored in a secure location, also to ensure the scientific verifiability of our results.

Further information on data protection aspects of the interviews, in particular on your rights under the applicable regulations, can be found in the files "Declaration of consent and data protection information". You can download these as a PDF here. If you agree to take part in an interview, we will also hand these over to you personally or send them to you in advance.

Live. Music. Experience is a sub-project of Popular Music and the Rise of Populism in Europe. The transnational research project investigates the interactions between popular music and the rise of populist movements in Europe. It is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and is being carried out in Hungary, Sweden, Austria, Italy and Germany. It involves sociologists, musicologists and political scientists. In contrast to existing studies, we are primarily interested in how popular music (from hip-hop to pop to Schlager) is understood by listeners in the different countries.
