PhD project: What do I take with me? Comparative case study on object construction and mediation in museum shops in Taiwan and Germany

Abstract

The research awareness of this study started with the role and function of museum shops. It was found that the role and function of museum shops are mostly defined in terms of marketing. However, the objects in the museum shop themselves were not theoretically focussed on as the central access point for the museum shop, i.e. no questions were asked about the significance of the objects in the museum shop and how the objects in the museum shop were or should/could be "created". At this point, their own practical work experience had a major influence on the research design. The entire work process and realisation developed from the core of the new research concept, particularly with regard to the objects in the museum shop: In order to find a new perspective for the museum shop, the objects of the museum shop are placed in the centre of this research and examined in relation to the object construction and its mediation through the museum shop.

The work does not take a marketing perspective - the commercialisation of the museum (profit) is only discussed in passing. Instead, objects and practices in the museum shop are described, focussing among other things on how they have been used to date, object contexts, the multivocality of objects, fields of action and ritual practices of object use, characteristics of objects in the museum shop and mediation through objects in the museum shop.

To this end, a comparison is drawn between museum shops in Taiwan and Germany by confronting the theses of this research with the analysis of the objects and the results from the empirical research part. At the centre of this study are "The National Palace Museum" for Taiwan (NPM) and two museums for Germany: "The Germanic National Museum" in Nuremberg (GNM) and "The German Historical Museum" in Berlin (DHM).
