With its positive vote in 2010, the Science Council paved the way to a unique project: The Oldenburg University Medical Centre with its cross-border study programme. Two years later, the University of Oldenburg founded the School of Medicine and Health Sciences - the first new school of medicine in the nation to be founded in 20 years.
The European Medical School Oldenburg-Groningen offers first-class teaching with a great emphasis on practice and research in a unique cross-border study programme, which is one of a kind in Europe. In addition to the University of Groningen and its Faculty of Medical Sciences (Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen - UMCG), four hospitals in Oldenburg are cooperation partners of the medical school: the Evangelisches Krankenhaus Oldenburg, the Karl-Jaspers-Klinik, the Klinikum Oldenburg and the Pius-Hospital Oldenburg. A network of 120 medical teaching practices and of academic teaching hospitals across northwest Germany also take part in the teaching activities of the medical school.
The school’s medical research reaches across disciplines and borders, such as in the research on hearing led by the Exzellenzcluster Hearing4all or the newly established collaboration between the Health Services Research Division and the Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health.
