Grundlagen der Psychoakustik

Basic Psychoacoustics

One of the areas of research of the acoustics group is the investigation of the human auditory system. We try to understand how the perception of sound is working and which differences in auditory signals we are able to hear.

Physical and psychoacoustical methods are used for the investigation of the auditory system. The used signals are produced artificial to define the different parameters, which influence on auditory perception should be surveyed. Those signals are presented to subjects via headphones in soundproof booths or in the controlled acoustical enviroment of our anechoic room. The interpretation of the subjects responses allow conclusions of the functionality of the human auditory system.
The psychoacoustic results are often compared with physiological data of birds and different mammal species and they are also used as basis for auditory modelling. Those models should copy parts of the auditory system and their invention is used to deepen the understanding of the perception of sound.
