English Linguistics, Language Acquisition and Language Processing

Prof. Dr Marcel Schlechtweg has been appointed Professor of English Linguistics, Language Acquisition and Language Processing, at the Institute of English and American Studies. He worked as a Junior Professor at institute before, and he has been head of the institute since fall 2024.

From 2008 to 2013, Schlechtweg studied English, French, and Education at the University of Kassel (Germany) with the aim of becoming a teacher. During this time, he also spent a longer time in Bordeaux (France) and at Dartmouth College in the US. He completed his doctorate in Kassel in 2017, worked there as a post-doctoral researcher and lecturer and finally came to Oldenburg in 2020.

His research focuses on the acquisition and processing of phonetic, phonological, and morphological aspects, for instance, in the context of linguistic hearing as well as second language research. On the one hand, Schlechtweg examines the functions of grammatical structures when spoken language is perceived under adverse listening conditions. On the other hand, he analyses the so-called finde acoustic detail in oral utterances and investigates whether certain functions can be attributed to this detail in a first and/or second language.
