Scientific Writing and Publishing Workshop

Each participant is required to have written a scientific document in English that is at least ¾ completed, or have already submitted or published in an English-language journal (without other authors). If you have a joint publication, send me the first version that you wrote alone and state that this is the case. A Master’s thesis in English is also acceptable. This document must be sent to the instructor at desmosa(at)gmx.de at the latest one week before the course begins.

Part 1: Scientific publishing today
•    Structure of scientific papers
•    Choosing a journal
•    Journal instructions
•    Author responsibilities and coordination
•    Title, Writing an abstract
•    Grammar and paper sections
•    Ethics in publishing
•    Pitfalls: plagiarism and its consequences; citing and quoting, passive
      voice, British or American English. Common errors
•    Submitting your manuscript, including letter to the editor
•    Choosing possible reviewers
•    Responding to reviews
•    Posters, conference talks

Part 2. Small group work (3 participants) on existing manuscripts, theses or papers. Individual tips on how to write in concise, unambiguous and elegant English. 

Procedures 2022: 
Covid-19 restrictions require that we only meet online using the university’s “BigBlueButton” system. Part 1 will be held on the first course day, during which we will all meet virtually for the whole day. This will be followed by days in which maximally three participants will work with the instructor to improve their manuscripts. Which day each participant will take part will be determined in advance in a preparatory online meeting. All participants can, however, listen in anytime. 

Times:
Monday: 07.11.2022, 17:00 – 18:00 (preparatory session)
Monday: 21.11.2022, 08:30 - 17:30 (main online session)
Tuesday 22.11.2022 - Friday 25.11.2022 (time slots for small working group online sessions)

For every participant the amount of mandatory working hours (online) will amount to min. 16 hours + preparation (offline).
