We mourn the loss of
Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Hilbert Meyer
His work with his head, heart and hands will always keep his memory alive.
The members of the Institute of Educational Sciences
In Hilbert Meyer, we have lost a school educator who took a committed, intensive and critical look at the development of schools and teaching. He was actively involved in the development of single-phase teacher training (ELAB) and his commitment helped to shape many structural developments at the University of Oldenburg that are still in place today, such as the School Development Centre. His books have been translated into eleven languages worldwide and sold millions of copies. For decades, they have helped countless students and trainee teachers to plan and implement good teaching.
Even as a retiree, Hilbert Meyer has remained tirelessly committed to school development and the next generation of academics. He put his heart and soul, expertise and experience into promoting educational innovation and was in demand both nationally and internationally as a speaker and mentor. Thankfully, he continued to be very close to us at the University of Oldenburg, he supervised doctoral students until the end and at the end of October, as part of the celebratory event to mark the 80th anniversary of academic teacher training in Oldenburg, he was still on the podium discussing visions and challenges for future teacher training.
Together with many companions, we mourn the loss of Hilbert Meyer as an outstanding person who dedicated himself to teacher training with his head, heart and hands. With his inspiring personality, his radiance in the context of research, teaching and internationalisation and his ability to build bridges between theory and practice, he and his work will continue to have an impact beyond his death. Hilbert Meyer's extraordinary work fills us with great gratitude and extraordinary appreciation.
We know that the news of Hilbert Meyer's death has caused deep sadness among many. Together with the Institute of Educational Sciences, the DiZ will display a book of condolences in the foyer of the DiZ office (near room A4-1-124) from 5 January 2026 to 31 January 2026, in which you are welcome to express your grief. You are also welcome to send your condolences digitally via the following e-mail address: This content will then be integrated into the book of condolences, which we would like to hand over to the family in February.
Our thoughts are with his family and all those who were close to him.
