Oldenburg. Prof Dr A. Peter Young, physicist at the University of California, Santa Crusz (USA), will be conducting research at the University of Oldenburg over the next three years as a Humboldt Research Award winner. He is a guest of the Oldenburg physicist Prof. Dr Alexander Hartmann and is conducting research in his "Computer-Oriented Theoretical Physics" working group. His research focuses on the dynamics of random field systems and the use of continuous degrees of freedom to solve discrete optimisation problems.

Young is one of the leading international experts in the field of statistical physics of disordered systems, in particular for numerical simulations. He studied physics at Oxford (England). After obtaining his doctorate in 1973, he worked at the Institute Laue Langevin, Grenoble (France) and at Cornell University (USA). From 1978, he researched and taught at Imperial College London (England). He has been Professor of Physics at the University of California (USA) since 1985. Young has been honoured several times for his work: in 1985 he received the Maxwell Medal for theoretical physics and in 2009 the Aneesur Rahman Prize of the American Physical Society for computational physics. Since 1989 he has been a Fellow of the American Physical Society (1989).

With the Humboldt Research Award, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation honours scientists whose fundamental discoveries, findings or theories have had a lasting impact on their own discipline.
