Obituary Dr. Jürgen Schumacher

Former Head of PPRE (from 1996 - 2002), Dr. Jürgen Schumacher passed away unexpectedly on December 27, 2020 in Montreal, Canada.

Jürgen Schumacher, who came from Duisburg (born 1952), studied applied engineering and later mathematics in Frankfurt. In this field he wrote his diploma thesis on a topic from the field of renewable energy at the University of Oldenburg and received his doctorate in 1991 with his basic work on the topic of simulation of regenerative energy systems within the research group "Physics of Regenerative Energy" from which PPRE was founded in 1987. Dr. Schumacher was involved in teaching at PPRE at an early age, he began with simulation courses for the students, the supervision of laboratories and later, when he was Managing Director of PPRE from 199x until he moved to the HfT Stuttgart, he gave the basic lecture in solar energy and was naturally involved in many third-party funded projects.

His reaction to intermediate questions in lectures was proverbial: ".. it depends ..."
Dr. Schumacher is known and respected through and with INSEL as an expert in the digital simulation and modeling of energy systems from rain sources. He published scientific articles for conferences and led sessions.

Dr. Schumacher was one who worked hard and partied just as hard. He was also very popular with students at the time. Even after he left us, we had a lot of contacts, he supervised external master's theses and external internships and of course INSEL of the Univ. Oldemburg made available on favorable terms.

As a person and as a scientist, we miss him very much. We mourn with Prof. Ursula Eucker, his partner in science and private life.
