ICCCE 2018- International Conference on Cascade Use and Circular Economy

ICCCE 2018- International Conference on Cascade Use and Circular Economy

by Alexandra Pehlken, Research Group Cascade Use at University of Oldenburg

Fernando Peñaherrera and Juan Camilo Gómez Trillos, PPRE alumni, presented their current scientific research work at the ICCCE 2018- International Conference on Cascade Use and Circular Economy on September 24th and 25th, 2018, in Oldenburg.

Both were speakers in the first session of the conference “Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Material Flow Assessment”, chaired by Mark Mennenga from the TU Braunschweig. Mr. Peñaherrera presented a paper about the “Development and Application of Metrics for Evaluation of Cumulative Energy Efficiency for IT Devices in Data Centers”, framed within his research on resource consumption of German professional data centers in the TEMPRO Project at the University of Oldenburg (https://tempro.uni-oldenburg.de/).

Juan Camilo Gómez Trillos talked about his work at the DLR Institute of Networked Energy Systems: “The Material Use of Perovskite Solar Cells”. This work quantifies, through material flow analysis, the demand and discard of lead and indium in a scenario of future adoption of perovskite solar cells, considering four aspects for the construction of scenarios. The results show that the demand of lead might not be significant compared to the current supply. On the other hand, the use of indium in a high market share might go beyond the current supply of this material. The use of tandem technologies might decrease the use of materials due to a higher power conversion efficiency. Finally, the longer lifetime and the recycling at the end of life might decrease considerably the amount of materials that are dispersed into the environment.

After five years of funding by the FONA research programme from the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), this was the final conference of the research group "Cascade Use". Sixty scientists from Germany, China, Canada, and USA, as well as interested students from the University of Oldenburg came to discuss relevant topics on resource management and the related CO2 emission reduction.

ICCCE 2018 was organised by Cascade Use, under the lead of Dr.-Ing. Alexandra Pehlken, supported by the Co-Hosts Shanghai Jiao Tong University - SJTU (Prof. Chen Ming) and the AARTI – Alliance of Automotive Recovery Technology Innovation. It follows a joint conference between SJTU and the University of Oldenburg last year in Shanghai: The first International Symposium on Cascade Use of Automotive Parts 2017. Unfortunately, due to the cancellation of his flight the co-host Prof. Chen Ming could not attend the ICCCE 2018.

Beside Life Cycle Assessment and Material Flow Assessment, the conference addressed in further sessions the topics: Sustainable mobility Services, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), Industrial Ecology, (Re-) Manufacturing, Cascade Use and Waste Management 4.0. Four notable keynote-speakers provided interesting input with their following presentations:

  • Susanne Rotter (University of Technology Berlin and Member of the Advisory Council on the Environment of the German Government): “Time to take a turn: climate action in the transport sector - or about the relationship of transition challenges and the Circular Economy”
  • Christian Hagelüken (Director EU Government Affairs at the Umicore AG & Co. KG): “Closing the metals‘ loop - Recycling of electronics & Li-Ion batteries”
  • Henning Wilts (Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, Energy, Germany) “Circularity in the German ELV (End-of-life vehicle) recycling sector?”
  • Christoph Herrmann (IWF, TU Braunschweig, Germany): Can digitalization enable Circular Economy?

The entire program as well as all presentations from the conference are available on the ICCCE 2018 homepage: https://iccce2018.com/. The username and password to access the presentation is “iccce2018”.

Complementary to the ICCCE 2018 the conference book “Cascade Use in Technologies 2018” was published by Springer. The book is double peer reviewed and edited by Alexandra Pehlken, Matthias Kalverkamp and Rikka Wittstock. It contains 17 papers of the presentations from the conference including “Development and Application of Metrics for Evaluation of Cumulative Energy Efficiency for IT Devices in Data Centers” by Fernando Peñaherrera and Katharina Szczepaniak and  “The Material Use of Perovskite Solar Cells” by Juan Camilo Gómez Trillos, Urte Brand and Thomas Vogt.
