PPRE-News - October 2019 / Vol. 41

Dear PPRE-Community,

thirty years after the wall came down in Germany and even 32 years after the inauguration of PPRE at University of Oldenburg, the PPRE-team still encounters frequent winds of change:

• after the retirement of Prof. J. Parisi (Head of Energy and Semiconductor Research Group), Prof. Carsten Agert (Director of DLR - Institute of Networked Energy Systems, Oldenburg) is the new Head of PPRE.
• Dr. Herena Torio is new Managing Director of both RE MSc-Study Programmes (PPRE and EMRE/EUREC) at University of Oldenburg after our highly respected colleague Michael Golba retired as well recently.
• the Energielabor was closed until further notice
• PPRE was relocated to a new ‘home’

Despite all changes, daily routines keep us busy: new MSc-students are welcomed; labs, lectures and seminars are to be developed and performed, research projects for senior students are to be found, etc.

We hope that you will enjoy these news from Oldenburg, its ongoing research activities and the reports from students and alumni, helping us to even increase PPRE network activities.

Your feedback and contributions (reports, papers, publications, links, etc.) for the next PPRE-News are most welcome.

Stay tuned
The PPRE-Team

SYSTEM SWITCH DURING OPERATION - an interview with Carsten Agert on sector integration in the field of energy supply

DLR Institute of Networked Energy Systems

The energy transition has two clear winners so far among renewable energy sources – photovoltaics and wind. How can they replace fossil fuels, which are soon to be abandoned? Carsten Agert, Director of the DLR Institute of Networked Energy Systems, believes the answer lies in sector integration, also known as sector coupling.

Eye2Sky - Networked cloud cameras forecast light and shadow

DLR Institute of Networked Energy Systems

Variations in the intensity of the sunlight over solar power plants is having an increasing impact on the energy supply system. In the future, grid operators will have to react quickly to the passage of individual cloud formations, because the shadows they cast immediately affect the energy yield of the solar panels across entire regions.

LOAD MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES FOR WEAK GRIDS WITH HIGH PENETRATION OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Babak Ravanbach (EUREC 2015-16)

The objective of this paper was to evaluate different load management strategies for weak grids with high penetration of electrical vehicles. The strategies are intended to operate distribution grids close to their physical and operational limits, which are the current rating of the cables and the voltage level for the safe operation of the applied load.

Wind Excursion 2019

NDOH, EUGENE TINJINUI, Cameroon (PPRE 2019-21)

With the ever-rising world energy demands fueled by rapidly increasing industrialization levels and the necessity to power distant off-grid locations coupled with the need to curb on pollution from conventional power sources like oil, whose CO2 emission impact is huge and whose supply is already fast finishing, the “new energy sources” have rapidly stemmed out as an alternative.
