Learning Causal Relations: An Introduction to the PC-Algorithm

 

Abstract: Understanding causal relationships is important in various scientific fields. Traditional approaches commonly use interventional experiments to study such cause-effect relationships. However, in several situations such experiments are not feasible due to physical or ethical constraints. Structural causal models enable the investigation of causal relationships based on observational data. A particular challenge is the derivation of such causal structures. Causal learning methods are applied to identify causal relationships based on data. In this presentation, we will provide an introduction to causal learning through the example of the PC-algorithm, developed by Peter Spirtes and Clark Glymour, which utilizes conditional independencies to systematically uncover causal structures.
