Newsletter July 2019

A lot has happened on the cluster and in our HPC area recently.

About the most recent plans, new software versions and hints.

1.       Interactive Jobs and Remote Desktop Connection: The standard way of using a HPC cluster is with batch jobs submitted in form of a job script. However, in some situations you may need to work in an interactive manner, usually for testing or if graphical in- or output is used. In many cases, the login nodes should be sufficient for this kind of interactive work but larger tests may require the use of compute nodes. In the wiki, you can find information on how to use compute nodes for interactive jobs (even with X11-forwarding). Please be kind to others, do not let resource remain idle and terminate you interactive jobs as soon as you have no longer need of them.

If your interactive job requires the use of graphical in- or output, you may want to use the possibility to connect to the HPC cluster using the Remote Desktop Protocol as described in the HPC wiki. This is particularly useful, if your internet connection is too slow or not stable enough for X11-forwarding.

2.       Mailing List and Account: As you probably know, you are receiving this e-mail because you have an active HPC account. If you no longer need your HPC account, you can login here and leave your HPC group (alternatively, send an e-mail to ).  Please note, that any data still stored under your account becomes inaccessible and will be deleted after 180 days. Make sure to retrieve the data you want to keep before. Also talk to your group leader in case the data should be used in follow-up project (your group leader could ask for a group share in that case).

3.        HPC News: From now on, we would like to provide you with HPC news more regularly about once a month. The newsletter will contain  current changes and improvements to the HPC system (e.g. recent software installations), information on upcoming events and useful tips and tricks from the HPC wiki (as No. 2 above). Any suggestions are welcome to

4.       Upcoming Events and Important Dates:

a.       We are planning another 3-day course “Introduction to HPC” in the end of September, the exact date will be announced in the next letter.

b.       The next Euro-Par conference covering all aspects of parallel and distributed processing, will be held Aug 26th – 30th, 2019 in Göttingen. See  https://2019.euro-par.org/ for details.

c.       HLRN-IV is preparing for the installations of the second phase in Berlin and Göttingen. If you are already using HLRN resources, please check https://www.hlrn.de/home/view/NewsCenter/HLRN4News for implications. If you are not a HLRN user you can request an account for testing (go tohttps://zulassung.hlrn.de/index.html) with a limited budget of CPU hours (NPLs). Additional time can be requested for projects, the next deadline for a proposal is October, 28th, 2019.

5.       Recent Software Installations: The following modules are now available in the environment hpc-env/6.4:
