Changes to the subject Master's programme "Sport and Lifestyle"

With effect from the winter semester 2021/22, the subject Master's degree programme "Sport and Lifestyle" was developed into the subject Master's degree programme "Sport Science". It is therefore no longer possible to enrol on the previous subject Master's degree programme "Sport and Lifestyle".

spo840 - Culture and social science specialisation

Module objectives/competences:
Students deepen their social and cultural science tools for researching sport and other physical activity practices. They learn to grasp multi-perspectively structured connections between life situations, lifestyles, social and political framework conditions (such as health policy) and sports commitment within and outside sports organisations and comparable institutions, to analyse the various phenomena of sport and exercise culture with central cultural-analytical (such as representation, performativity and gender) and organisational-theoretical concepts and to draw conclusions from the combination of perspectives for the conception of target group-related sports offers in different organisational contexts of sport.

Module content:
Social and cultural science perspectives focus on different levels and dimensions of the social. Social science perspectives primarily focus on the systems of material reproduction of a society (economy, professional system, education system etc. and their organisations), while cultural science perspectives open up the meaningful dimensions of the social (systems of meaning, symbols, expressive forms). Using the example of sport, the module focuses on the empirical interaction of these levels, which can only be separated analytically: It provides the means by which the significance of sport as an independent functional and cultural system of representation in modern, differentiated society can be explored, as well as its relevance as a meaningful and meaning-creating activity of social subjects. In particular, a) the specifics of the organisational forms of sport and their interactions, and b) the significance of social and (health) political framework conditions for the individual creation of meaning in and through sport will be reflected upon. In this way, it should become clear that social structures, political framework conditions and organisational contexts on the one hand and sport-related processes of self-education and subjectivation on the other form an intertwined relationship.

spo850 - Specialisation in natural and health sciences

Objectives of the module/competences:
- Development of experimental research designs and critical reflection on their appropriateness

- Ability to critically reflect on the usability and generalisability of results from laboratory experiments
- Competence to work with a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, in accordance with the respective research design (e.g. in a phenomenological research project).e.g. in a phenomenological-experimental approach)

Module content:
Students plan and carry out experiments in the laboratory on neurophysiological, training science and biomechanical issues and evaluate them. The work in the seminar is supported by research-related guidance and supervision in the tutorials.
Laboratory experiments, experiments in the field, performance diagnostic tests and motor aptitude tests as well as physiotherapeutic practices are analysed from the perspective of theories of the "moving person" with regard to their significance.

spo860 - Interdisciplinary elective programme

Objectives of the module/competences:
Individual profile development; if necessary, postgraduate studies in sports practice to acquire experience-based assessment skills

Module content:
- Interdisciplinary supplementation of the sports science Master's modules with suitable courses from other degree programmes
- Courses from the area of specialisation
- Courses on the theory and practice of sports
- Self-study according to a partially independently researched reading list
- Courses as part of a stay abroad

spo870 - Short excursions - Key qualifications

Objectives of the module/competences:
Students make contact with organisations that offer sport and exercise for different target groups. They develop skills for the assessment of sport, exercise and therapy programmes using the social, cultural, movement and training science tools they have already acquired for researching sport and other movement practices. They expand their skills in analysing access barriers to such offers. It is important to analyse how and with what consequences the perspectives of users and providers are related to each other. The independent planning, implementation and evaluation of the excursions also promotes interdisciplinary qualifications in the field of communication and organisation.

Module content:
Students choose different facilities or institutions ( health insurance companies, cultural centres, companies, retirement homes, day care centres, etc.) as research and consulting fields and explore their offers for play, sport , exercise and therapy under certain questions, e.g. whether and how offers are (can be) used by the addressed groups or individual children, young people or adults for meaningful and meaningful activities. Further priorities are to be set with the exploration of possible problems of the providers and the need for external counselling.

spo880 - Internship related to professional field

Objectives of the module/competences:
- Ability to grasp problems in selected academic appointments
- Ability to reflect when working on questions relating to the connection between theory and empiricism
- Ability to make a well-founded selection of theoretical concepts with regard to analysing tasks in academic appointments and developing implementation options in practical concepts
- Competence in evaluating practice

Module content:
Examination of fields of investigation of academic appointment on the basis of social, cultural and natural science qualifications and methodological competences.
A relevant organisation/institution or a combination of occupational fields can be chosen as the location for the work placement.

spo890 - Project studies on a sports-specific field of activity

Objectives of the module/competences:
The aim of the project studies is both the realisation of a realistic empirical project, in the course of which the students independently update, deepen and test their existing sports science, methodological, organisational and didactic knowledge, as well as the development of their own skills in dealing with new areas of responsibility, new working methods and new people.
In particular, the following competences should be deepened and tested:

- The ability to make a reasoned selection and application of various theories, concepts and methods for a theoretical-empirical investigation and the presentation of its results.
- The competence to plan, organise, implement and evaluate a project in a team.
- The skills to present and document a project.

Importance of the module in the degree programme:
The module builds in particular on the methods module (spo830), the cultural and social science (spo840) and natural science (spo850) specialisation modules and the interdisciplinary elective course (spo860). The competences, content and perspectives acquired there should be applied and tested in your own project carried out in a team. The project topic or the field of work to be researched in the form of a project in the area of sport can and should be chosen according to the student's own specialisations. A continuation of the smaller research project carried out in spo830 is also possible, as is a link with the work placement in the field.

Module content:
The project study programme is a course in which theory and practice are combined in a special way. Students work in teams to practise important aspects of their future professional fields, from the idea to the finished 'prototype', e.g. of a target group-related sports or exercise programme. Where possible, experts from different fields of sport and related movement cultures should be involved. Project implementation begins with brainstorming and research in the field of sport. Depending on the task, research designs must then be developed and project processes organised. The role of project leader is in the hands of a team member appointed by the team. Drafts for the project are developed together in discussions, tasks and responsibilities are distributed within the team, and interim results are discussed and evaluated. At the same time, students learn to improve their social (communication) skills, to better organise their work processes and to perceive and evaluate their subtasks in the context of the project. At the end, the results are presented to other students, possibly also to interested parties from the university and the fields of sport being researched. The following contents in particular are developed and discussed in the tutorial:

- Selection of an exemplary subject
- Reconstruction of the history of the chosen field of work
- Selection and appropriate focussing of the project-relevant sport science approaches and their methods
- Implementation of the theoretical-conceptual approaches developed in the concrete research design of an empirical study
- Creation of procedure and flow charts
- Reflection on the format of an adequate form of mediation and the profile of the target groups with or for whom research is to be conducted (What expertise is needed? How should the project results be prepared and presented? Etc.).
- Documentation of results.

In the accompanying research colloquium, fundamental theses are discussed, difficulties and contradictions of a theoretical and methodological nature are explicated and (interim) results are presented.
