Sustainable Renewable Energy Technologies - Master's Programme

Orientation and Goals

The Sustainable Renewable Energy Technologies (SuRE) Master Programme – formerly known as Postgraduate Programme in Renewable Energy (PPRE) - has been offered by the Institute of Physics, University of Oldenburg since 1987. Over 560 students from about 90 countries (particularly from Africa, Asia, Central and South America, but also from Germany and other industrialised countries) have successfully completed this 24 month degree programme.

After finishing the programme, SuRE students should be able to
  • critically analyse and discuss the role of Renewable Energy technologies in a climate and resource constrained energy sector
  • explain different renewable energy technologies and its performance, covering the evaluation of Renewable Energy resources, principles of different conversion processes, characteristics of various materials, design of systems, performance of systems in operation as well as the use of models and tools for simulation and sizing
  • explain and evaluate in depth the implementation of Renewable Energy for specific areas
  • apply analytical research methodologies, including a reflective and critical approach to hands-on
  • critically assess the principles of the socio-economic evaluation and sustainability of Renewable Energy technologies and the role of regulatory policy frameworks in the context of Renewable Energy, covering in particular developing countries
  • apply scientific knowledge to a professional situation, as a reflective practitioner
  • work in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary team
  • communicate in a clear and structured way in both oral and written format

Technical focuses include
  • teaching the physical foundations of renewable energy systems
  • technical implementation and economic conditions for the use of renewable energies
  • practical testing of components, decentralised energy supply systems
  • analysis and planning, concrete decentralised energy supply projects (case studies)
  • contacts with firms and institutions in the area of utilising renewable energy sources

Foreign Language Skills

German language skills are not required for admission.

In order to study this course at the University of Oldenburg, you need an adequate knowledge of English.

You can proof your English language proficiency with the following language certificates:
  • Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) Level B2
  • if applicants are native speaker or they have university entrance qualification or a university degree obtained in English

Careers and Areas of Employment

The career perspectives for graduates are very good today, not only in Germany but also internationally. The corresponding market continues to grow. German companies are also becoming increasingly active internationally in this field.

Currently, graduates of the "Renewable Energy" Master's programme are mainly employed:

  • in industry,
  • energy suppliers,
  • consultancies,
  • research institutions.

There are also opportunities to work in international organisations and projects. Some alumni are now self-employed.

Globally networked job exchange 

Due to the numerous international contacts and relationships of the programme, but above all due to the existing active alumni network, a kind of worldwide internship and job exchange in the field of "Renewable Energy" has developed, from which not only the students but also more and more the graduates of the programme benefit.

Target Group/Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in physics, technical and engineering physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or from prior studies in a closely related field worth at least 180 credit points
  • English language proficiency at level B2 of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Proof of language proficiency through one of the following language certificates: TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Advanced Exam, Cambridge Proficiency Exam, in case applicants are not native speaker neither they have a university entrance qualification nor a first university degree obtained in English
  • Further documents:
    • Evidence of relevant professional experience or internships (ideally in an energy-relevant field)

Application/Admission Procedures

This course of studies accepts a limited number of applicants. Applications for the first semester are only possible in the winter semester.
The application deadline for the following winter semester is October 15 for DAAD scholarship applicants and January 15 for self-sponsored applicants.
