Engineering Physics - Dual Study Program - Bachelor's Programme

The Dual Study Programme in Engineering Physics is designated as a full-time study programme of eight semesters. Practical parts need to be absolved in a cooperating company to achieve a recognized apprenticeship. The study program is structured in modules and corresponds to the guidelines of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The students are supposed to work in a company during the first semester as well as during the semester breaks which represents the integrated part of practice oriented training. The apprenticeship will be completed in the 7th semester. During the first and the 7th semester no ECTS points can be acquired leading to an overall credit point amount of 180 ECTS at the end of the 8th semester. The contents of the modules and the amount of achievable credit points of the Dual Study Program from the 2nd semester and higher correspond with the regular Bachelor Program of Engineering Physics of the first semester.

Orientation and Goals

The Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg and the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer offer with this practical oriented Dual Study Programme in Engineering Physics a scientifically substantiated and application-oriented study course. It enables the graduates to manage the tasks of a scientific engineer in industries, to promote and realize innovations in form of products and projects that fulfill the in-line with the market requirements. Furthermore, fundaments for further scientific qualification in a Master Studies in Engineering Physics are given.

The lectures are identical to the international bachelor's programme in Engineering Physics which fills the gap between traditional physics and engineering. Since 1998, students in this programme have acquired a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of mathematics and the natural sciences in combination with application oriented engineering, including the skills needed to further develop modern technologies. In laboratory projects, teams work through real world assignments. Many students complete their final project in a technology oriented business or an external research institute.

More than half of the students in the international Engineering Physics Programme come from abroad. Students from many continents work closely together in lectures, practice sessions, and projects. The classes in the first two semesters at the universities are offered entirely in English, and later contain an increasing share taught in German. Admission to this English speaking programme requires good English skills.

This Dual Study Programme in Engineering Physics is accredited by the accreditation agency ASIIN (www.asiin.de), and has been awarded the EUR-ACE® label. This ensures the international recognition of the programme.

Study Design and Contents

The vocational education is distributed over the entire study progress and is partially carried out during semester breaks. After the first semester of the apprenticeship (start: February; registration: April) the first semester of university lectures takes place during the 2nd semester at the University of Oldenburg. Upon completion of the 3rd semester, seminars and courses do take place at the University of Applied Sciences at the campus Emden as well. There is the possibility of an early company-based education from August on. The final part of the recognized occupation requiring formal training is completed during the 7th semester. The academic part of the dual study is fully integrated in the Bachelor Study of Engineering Physics, which combines the study of physics with engineering sciences. The lectures in mathematics deal with mathematical methods in physics and engineering. Lab projects, which are performed in teams, present a further section of the academic part.

Reasons for Studying

The Dual Study Programme of Engineering Physics connects a study in the field of natural sciences with a vocational education in a physical/technical field, e.g. laser technology & optics, mechatronics, mechanical or precision engineering, electronics or medical technologies within eight semesters. Future perspectives for these professions are excellent as well as the possibilities of further professional development during Master Programmes, e.g. a Master Degree in Science (M.Sc.) in Engineering Physics and, furthermore, possibilities of dissertations (PhD) are given. The study programme is characterized by the international environment which consists of an even proportion of international and German students leading to a fundament of optimal networking.

In order to study this course at the University of Oldenburg as a student from outside of Germany, you need an adequate knowledge of German.

Careers and Areas of Employment

As a result of the programme's well founded scientific and practical qualities, graduates are very well qualified for all areas of technology oriented industrial and research organisations, as well as for further study in the form of a master's degree (e.g. in Engineering Physics). Graduates also have practical experience from their project work, additionally qualifying them for employment in a management setting (using skills such as team work and entrepreneurial thinking).

Target Group/Admission Requirements

Higher education entrance qualification according to anabin.kmk.org, recognition may apply for all courses (general qualification) or for certain courses (subject-specific qualification).

Contract of a study course related apprenticeship recognized by the chamber of industry and commerce plus aadditional student contract with a partner company are necessary.

Language proficiency

Application/Admission Procedures

The study course is admission free. Application is possible only in summer semester. The application deadline is 15th April.
