Ways to study and programme structures

Ways to study and programme structures

At the University of Oldenburg, you can choose different ways to study.

Teaching careers with Bachelor's and Master's degrees

To qualify as a teacher, you will first follow a dual-subject Bachelor's degree with two school subjects for three years. After gaining your Bachelor's degree you will follow a Master of Education (MEd) programme for two years.

In the Bachelor's degree programme, you will already need to choose specific subject combinations for your chosen school type.

The Master's degree is a prerequisite for teacher training (Referendariat). On successfully completing your teacher training and passing the second state examination, you will be qualified to teach in schools.

Ways to study Dual-subject Bachelor's Programme

Research careers with Bachelor's and Master's degrees

If you are planning a research career, the first step is a Bachelor's degree. After this, you will follow a Master's degree which usually lasts two years. Finally, a PhD is usually required for a research position.

The Bachelor's degree is structured depending on your chosen field of study: either as a degree programme with a single subject or a dual-subject Bachelor's degree. The Master's degree programmes usually follow-on from the Bachelor's degree. In the natural sciences degree programmes, the single-subject Bachelor's degree is usually required for the single-subject Master's degree.

Business and other careers with Bachelor's and Master's degrees

If you are planning a career in business, industry, associations or public service, you will start with a Bachelor's degree. Similarly to a research career, you can choose the type of degree programme depending on your specialization and field of study from either a single subject or a dual-subject Bachelor's degree. After completing your Bachelor's degree you have the following options:

  • Start working
The Bachelor's degree qualifies graduates to enter a profession in industry or follow other careers.

  • Follow-on Master's degrees
After your Bachelor's degree you can choose to study a Master's degree, which builds on the content of your existing degree or specializes in additional areas.

  • Master's degree after gaining professional experience
You can start your career directly after your Bachelor's degree and then follow a Master's degree at a later point in time to advance your qualifications.
