Study with or without a high school diploma

Anyone who has the corresponding German higher education entrance qualification is entitled to study on an undergraduate degree programme. This so-called higher education entrance qualification is available for the degrees and requirements listed.

1. studying with A-levels

General higher education entrance qualification

The general higher education entrance qualification (usually the Abitur) gives access to all degree programmes.

The general higher education entrance qualification can be obtained at the following institutions:

  • Upper secondary school
  • specialised grammar school
  • college
  • Evening grammar school
  • Vocational secondary school with second foreign language

2. studying without A-levels

Subject-restricted higher education entrance qualification

The subject-restricted higher education entrance qualification is awarded by Berufsoberschulen (BOS). Holders of a subject-restricted higher education entrance qualification are limited to degree programmes that correspond to the subject area of the Berufsoberschule. Please check the explanations on your diploma carefully to see which degree programmes you are eligible for.

If in doubt, please contact the vocational secondary school you attended or, as a first step, the InfoLine Studies, which will forward you to the Admissions office if necessary.

Advanced technical college entrance qualification

The Fachhochschulreife entitles the holder to study in the relevant subject area at universities.

In the case of a dual-subject Bachelor's programme, the first subject must take into account the corresponding subject area. This applies in particular to a degree programme with the aim of becoming a teacher.

As a rule, the Fachhochschulreife is obtained at Fachoberschulen (FOS) with the respective specialisation. You can view the relevant degree programmes for each subject area here:

Assignment of the Fachhochschulreife to degree programmes at the University of Oldenburg (§ 18 para. 3 NHG)

In addition to the standard qualification, there are other forms of Fachhochschulreife. These include, for example, the so-called "general Fachhochschulreife" with an academic and a practical part. In this form, the practical part determines the corresponding specialisation at universities.

To have suitable degree programmes checked in individual cases, contact the InfoLine Studies at an early stage, which will forward you to the Admissions office if necessary.

Academic appointment

In many cases, it is also possible for applicants with previous academic appointments to take up a degree programme.

  • Find out about previous academic appointments that confer a general qualification to study. These include state-recognised educators, master craftsmen, business administrators and others.
  • Three years of vocational training and three years of professional experience often entitle you to study a subject-related degree programme.

As a first step, please contact the InfoLine Studies, which will forward you to the Admissions office if necessary.

We recommend that you seek advice from the Admissions office before submitting your online application.

If you have a higher education entrance qualification based on previous vocational training or would like to have this checked, you should compile all school and vocational training documents, prepare a CV and submit it to the Admissions office well in advance of your application.

Admission test (Z-test)

If you have passed the "Examination for the acquisition of a subject-related higher education entrance qualification after prior academic appointment" (Z examination), you can apply for a degree programme at a university in Lower Saxony for which you have acquired a subject-related higher education entrance qualification through the examination.

You can find out more about the requirements, the exam structure and how to apply on the website Hochschulzugangsprüfung ohne Abitur (C3L)

Please submit your documents in one PDF, stating your desired degree programme:

Enquiries that do not take this form into account cannot be processed further.

Prospective students with international certificates should contact uni-assist to check their eligibility to study.
