Oldenburg city and surroundings

Oldenburg is a good place to live. Our small city with more than 170,000 inhabitants is located in the northwest of Germany between the North Sea, Hamburg and the Dutch border. The North Sea shapes the climate: in summer it is not too hot, in winter not too cold.

Typical Oldenburg

City of bicycles

The most popular means of transport in Oldenburg is the bicycle. There is a very well developed network of cycle paths and beautiful leisure routes.

Bicycles can be bought new in bicycle shops or used in various ways. Bicycles can also be borrowed for a small amount in the bicycle self-help workshop of the university.

Oldenburg's summer festival Kultursommer

The Kultursommer is a must for all those who visit Oldenburg in summer. Be sure not to miss the open air concerts on the Schlossplatz!

Oldenburg event highlights throughout the year

Capital of curly kale

Winter in Oldenburg is never boring: small groups of people with handcarts roam the countryside in wind and weather – it's curly kale hike time!

Christmas time

Enjoy the festive atmosphere of the Lambertimarkt, Oldenburg's Christmas market! From the end of November until Christmas, it offers the opportunity to meet friends over a hot beverage or to get Christmas presents.

The Wadden Sea

Not far from Oldenburg on the North Sea coast lies the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park – a real special feature! Day trips to the spa town of Dangast or to an East Frisian island are a good idea. If you like, take a mudflat hike.
