Repairing and upcycling from the perspective of aesthetic and cultural education

Before objects can be repaired or "repurposed", awareness and knowledge about them are required. Therefore, the first step is to sensitise children and young people to their designed environment and to create an emotional-motivational basis for this field of learning. Using methods of aesthetic research, a change of perspective is achieved that changes the view of our environment and things. This leads to creative processes of experimenting, searching and finally finding a final form, which materialise the creative process (design process) in a work-like manner. These "image openers" help us to perceive the world in a more differentiated way with regard to sustainable options for action or to produce objects in the sense of upcycling and to put them to a new use. The lecture will show examples and methods from the study of design education.

In this short presentation, you will learn how the RETIBNE project has developed (past), what we are currently implementing (present) and where we are heading (future).

At the beginning of the project, the location of the topics of the RETIBNE project in the educational plan of the learning area work and academic appointment of the state of Hamburg was discussed with the students. The students then made a well-founded decision in favour of a focus on bicycle repair, which led to a project seminar on this topic this year. You will gain an insight into the methodological and didactic design of the course and other projects developed in this context, such as teacher training programmes. In the outlook, we will show you the idea behind our concept for a mobile bicycle workshop.

Can repairing a smartphone save the world?
Probably not directly, but what can the process of repairing an individual change?

In our RETIBNE Café at the Department of Computing Science at Paderborn University, this process is divided into three phases: Information -> Repair -> Reflection.
The central question in the repair process is always: Why is something not working?
This why can be asked in different ways, switching several times between two understandings: the understanding of meaning and the understanding of architecture.

Our question is: Can this change contribute to a holistic understanding and what can this understanding contribute to sustainable education?

Production facilities only add value if they are fully functional and available. Companies therefore invest heavily in the maintenance of their production facilities, often by organising their own operational maintenance. The scope of this operational maintenance has changed considerably in recent years. The presentation describes this change and shows how the respective maintenance strategies and technologies have changed as a result. At the same time, the required competences of those responsible for service and maintenance have also grown. As part of a special degree programme at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University in Mannheim, it is now possible to obtain an academic degree as a service engineer.

Education for sustainable development is faced with the balancing act of creating doomsday scenarios on the one hand, e.g. what will happen if the earth continues to warm up and the situation becomes even worse than last summer, for example. On the other hand, people must not be paralysed. It makes no sense to freeze like a rabbit before a snake in the face of climate change. From its own perspective, each subject must therefore show where action has not been taken sustainably, but it must also show what can be done to make things better. The lecture will show what can be discovered in the consumer's world of goods and how repair - if it is possible - can contribute to sustainability. Education takes place when answers to the big questions of sustainable behaviour in production and consumption emerge from the small world of dealing with defective products in the classroom.

DIY and maker/mechatronics lab cultures are on the rise. Motivated by self-selected, individually very different construction projects, people acquire skills that they use not only for construction but also for repair. In the "DIY and Mechatronics Lab" at TU Berlin, experienced students support less experienced students and accompany them in the realisation of their own projects. Digital manufacturing processes available in the lab offer greater opportunities for recycling and upcycling, but also for the individualisation of products. The resulting personal added value could favour an extension of useful life. The lecture will present the work in the lab and some of the results.

Within the teacher training programme in technology at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, future teachers are offered the opportunity to engage with the discourse on education for sustainable development and to go through their own educational process, which is oriented towards the concept of strengthening their own evaluation, design and system competence within the framework of TBNE. The starting point is the TBNE concepts developed at the professorship for technical education and its didactics for the training of prospective teachers for the subject of technology at general education schools in Saxony-Anhalt, which enable the necessary expansion of the competences of student teachers in the sense of TBNE. Building on this, the future teachers develop, test and evaluate TBNE teaching concepts.

Repairing as a school subject - that would be something!

Because the curriculum does not (yet) allow for this, various forms of (voluntary) repair initiatives are also being developed at and with schools. As a project day, working group, compulsory elective subject or community project - the presentation presents some examples of repair projects in the school context and gives tips on how to realise such a project yourself and what you need to bear in mind: How can local repair initiatives cooperate with schools? How can pupils be involved in the organisation and process right from the start? How can continuity be established?

The Repair Initiatives Network advises and networks volunteer-organised and non-commercial repair projects throughout Germany, where people meet in a cosy atmosphere and repair broken everyday objects together: Helping people to help themselves against the throwaway mentality.

In contrast to repairing a television, sewing on a button or hem is very simple. Nevertheless, for many people today, mending cheap mass-produced clothing makes no sense. In the lecture, we will look at typical repair areas of fast fashion clothing alongside garments sold with holes and tears. The lecture also introduces the cultural history of clothing repair - from invisible artificial darning to today's visual mending.
