Together for affordable housing: trainees hand over petition
On Wednesday, 11 February, we handed over around 40 petition letters as part of the "Affordable housing for apprentices" campaign, a campaign organised by apprentices in ver.di. The message was clear: the trainees are calling on their employer, the university, to ensure that they too can apply for rooms in student residences.
The need is great: rising rents, high prices and low remuneration are making it increasingly difficult for apprentices to make a living. Rents in particular are a decisive factor - often more than half of the trainee's salary goes on this. This is why the trainees have called on their employers to take action: Almost 40 letters were signed, representing around 80% of the apprentices. Today, some of the trainees handed over the letters to Vice President Strübind.
Strübind was open to the request and said: "I will take your initiative on board, I promise you that." The issue will first be discussed by the Presidential Board, after which she would like to have the matter legally examined. At the same time, the apprentices were open to other ideas for creating additional access to affordable housing. We expect to receive re-registering students in the coming weeks. We will then decide on the next steps of the campaign.
