Gendering Disability

Both Disability Studies and Gender Studies pursue a socio-critical approach that decodes the normative categories of "normality" and "deviation" in relation to the body as constructs. Although both scientific fields work in an interdisciplinary manner, the multiple dimensions of the interdependence of disability and gender have often been ignored.

Against this background and with the aim of stimulating and perpetuating an interdisciplinary scientific discourse, Dr Jutta Jacob and Dr Eske Wollrad developed the research focus "Disability and Gender" at the ZFG. Two major (subject) conferences were conceived and organised under their leadership. Two publications followed.

Conferences:

Symposium: Disability and Gender - Perspectives in Theory and Practice, 12 December 2005

Conference: Gendering Disability - Disability and Gender in Theory and Practice, 22 and 23 January 2009

Publications:

Jutta Jacob, Eske Wollrad (eds.): Behinderung und Geschlecht - Perspektiven in Theorie und Praxis, 2007.

Jutta Jacob, Swantje Köbsell, Eske Wollrad (eds.): Gendering Disability. Intersectional Aspects of Disability and Gender, 2010.
