Masculinities and addiction

Between 2003 and 2009, under the direction of Dr Jutta Jacob and in close co-operation with Prof. Dr Heino Stöver, Bremen Institute for Drug Research (BISDRO), University of Bremen, the ZFG established a scientific focus on the topic of "Masculinities and Addiction". Addiction dynamics are an essential frame of reference for constructions of masculinity and the staging of masculinity. The influence of and myths about drugs serve or compensate for traditional images of masculinity of vitality, drive and values of success, money and status. Processes of addiction development and concepts of masculinity are closely interwoven. They are mutually dependent and intertwined.

Three specialist conferences organised by the ZFG and two relevant publications in the series "Studien interdisziplinäre Geschlechterforschung" (Studies in Interdisciplinary Gender Research) have established and consolidated the connection between addiction and masculinities in the specialist community.
