The Mistuned Harmonic paradigm explores how the auditory system groups concurrent sounds. Normally, harmonics of a fundamental frequency (f0) are fused into a single perceived tone. However, if one harmonic is shifted in frequency (mistuned), it "pops out" and is heard as a separate tone. This test determines the threshold of mistuning required for this segregation to occur across different harmonics and frequencies.

  1. Press "Start" to start a "Best of 5" demonstration experiment with the given fundamental frequency.
  2. The demonstration starts with a mistuned harmonic index of 1 and a mistuning level of 5%.
  3. Mistuning can apply to sounds, which can cause them to be perceived as two sounds.
  4. For each sound, judge whether you hear one or two sounds.
  5. Outcome Logic:
    • 5a. Progress Misstuning: After perceiving mistuned as "two" or normal as "one" 4 out of 5 trials, the mistuning level is lowered.
    • 5b. Progress Harmonics: Otherwise the mistuning resets to 5% and the harmonic index is increased.
  6. The harmonic indexes of 1, 3, 5 are tested.
