Full title of talk: Integration of Research Institutes into the future world-wide network of scientific information 2. Abstract: First, a brief personal sketch of what the future world-wide network of scientific information may be, is given. It is argued that only systems which are redundant (multiple copies of documents), distributed not dependent on the fate of individual institutes), complete (cover all research institutions worldwide), specific (contain only scientific information), unique (tranparent and coherent with regard to different fields in science), and most efficient for actual research (easy access to information on demand) will survive. Present experiments and projects are briefly mentioned. More specifically a scenario for research institutes such as the MPI is discussed, also with regard to differences to Departments at Universtities. Finally, several projects and collections are presented which point in this direction: 1. ) the prototype of document management system of the AWI (Alfred Wegener Institut fuer Polar-und Meeresforschung) 1. ) the prototype of document management system of the AWI (Alfred Wegener Institut fuer Polar-und Meeresforschung) (which includes Dublin Core metadata, and contains electronic automatic upload and management components). (Not yet on service). 2.) The Worldwide Network of all Physics Institutions (Departments, Research Institutes, etc., in total about 1.500). maintained by the European Physical Society. 3.) A worldwide distributed Database for scientific documents in physics. 4.) New developments in the central Database for scientific documents (LANL eprint Archive and its mirrors). Germany has now a fully operable upload station allowing additional formats (such as even WORD), and several internal mirrors. 5.) Linking the central and the distributed document networks wnd the publishers, as well as other databases. A service (MetapPhys) is demonstrated. 6.) Business models of a research institute for Journals of Publishers (commercial and others). Comparisons are presented of experiments to maximize the amount of retrieved scientific informaiton asked fo a specific project using different information channels. (Journals vs. Search engines plus email contact to authors, Web-sites of research institutes ..). Finally the present status of international and of interdisciplinary actions to aim at one coherent system is informed upon. More specifically, Mathematics and Physics have a perfect working relationship due to their very similar requirements and habits, and due to the activities of the IuK Initiative of Information and Communication of the learned societies in Germany. 3. ) Eberhard R.
