Digitization

A number of landmark medical articles, some dating back more than 125 years, will, for the first time, be made freely available on the Internet

A £1.25m scheme will fund the backfile digitisation of a number of high-impact, historically significant medical journals, including the Annals of Internal Medicine, Annals of Surgery, Biochemical Journal, Journal of Physiology and Medical History. In total, it is anticipated that around a dozen journals will be digitised under this scheme. Digitisation will commence in Spring 2004 and the first titles will be online early next year.

This project is being funded by the Wellcome Trust [£750,000] and the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) [£500,000]. The National Library of Medicine will manage the project, host the archive and ensure the digital files are preserved in perpetuity. All digitised content will be available free of charge via PubMed Central <http://www.pubmedcentral.org/> and will augment content already there.
