What is ICUR?

The International Conference of Undergraduate Research is an annual hybrid conference celebrating excellence in undergraduate research worldwide.

But ICUR is more than a conference.

It is a year-round programme of training and support for academic and professional development, from abstract submission through to presentation. It is an internationally immersive opportunity for students to network with and learn from the perspectives of like-minded undergraduates from all over the world – crucially, without students needing to travel internationally in order to benefit from these experiences and connections. Above all, it is a supportive yet rigorous research experience, helping students to develop their confidence and professional skills in communication, presentation, and engagement.

Key Benefits of Participating in ICUR

  • Interdisciplinary Connections and Communication
  • Immersive, Collaborative International Experiences Without Travel
  • Networking Opportunities
  • Academic, Professional, and Leadership Development
  • Comprehensive and Inclusive Training and Support
  • Exposure to and Development of Research Excellence

Interdisciplinary Exploration

At ICUR, we believe that the questions and challenges faced by the world today are interdisciplinary in nature. This means that they can’t be addressed by one person in one field of study: we need different people with different knowledge bases, different skillsets, and different lived experiences, in collaborative discussion and exploration.
That’s why ICUR is an interdisciplinary conference. It’s not about presenting your work to an audience of people in your discipline (although they’ll be there too!) It’s about engaging new audiences from many different backgrounds and areas of study, and thinking about how you talk about your work to people who may never have heard of your topic before. We believe that your research is important – and ICUR is an opportunity for you to communicate why.
Read our Introduction to Interdisciplinarity and start thinking about how your research could connect with different audiences!

International Connection

ICUR provides a platform for students to engage with peers worldwide, fostering connections that go beyond academic disciplines and geographical boundaries. Students from around the globe have the chance to discuss their research with their peers, gaining exposure to diverse perspectives and expanding their understanding of different fields. ICUR presenters have the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals and to see how similar issues are approached differently in various cultural and academic contexts.

  • “Being able to ask students on the other side of the world questions about their research. Through this technology, I have been exposed to research fields that would have otherwise been hidden from my knowledge.”
  • “The best part about ICUR was meeting with new like-minded people, interested and passionate about scientific research. It was also highly motivating to receive feedback on my presentation.”
  • “Presenting at a worldwide scale is a tremendous opportunity... it will help in building a profile as a researcher and equip young researchers with skills and boost one’s confidence in research.”

Academic and Professional Development

ICUR is an invaluable platform for honing presentation and communication skills, which are critical for future academic and professional endeavours. The experience of presenting research to an international and interdisciplinary audience builds confidence, encourages critical self-reflection, and provides a supportive environment to refine research work based on feedback.

  • “The three ICURs I've attended now have certainly played a part in my decision to undertake a PhD. They gave me the confidence I needed... and helped me develop the skills I required.”
  • “It was a great opportunity to improve my presentation skills. I felt that my research was given real-world value and enjoyed the experience hugely.”

Training

Information Sessions – What is ICUR?

Our introductory What is ICUR? sessions are hosted by the ICUR staff and Student Director team, and cover everything you need to know before submitting. They’re a great opportunity to ask the team anything you’re wondering about – there are no silly questions! – and to get a sense of whether ICUR is the right opportunity for you before you start the programme.

Abstract Writing Workshops

Maybe you’ve presented at conferences before – or maybe you’re not even sure what an abstract is? Whatever your experience, our Abstract Writing Workshops will set you up with all the tools you need to write a research abstract for the ICUR conference.
We’ll discuss the purpose of an interdisciplinary research abstract, and how to consider your audience; we’ll look at structure and content and talk about how we communicate complex ideas in limited word counts; and we’ll work together to identify the characteristics of a strong conference abstract. By the end of the session, you’ll have the outline of an abstract for your own research, and all the resources you need to develop it for submission to ICUR.

Abstract Writing Boot Camps

Have you been working on your abstract – but feel lost, confused, or not very confident? Or have you been thinking about submitting to ICUR, but not found the time?
Our Abstract Writing Boot Camps are an opportunity to set aside some protected time just to focus on your ICUR submission – but also to ask questions directly over Teams and get one-to-one support from the ICUR team in real time.
