Student's Council of Physics
Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg
Fakultät V - Institut für Physik
The student councils mentoring program targets all students in the first semester in the department of Physics. This way the new students will have the opportunity to get in contact with others in their course of studies as well as having a person to ask when problems occur during the start of their studies. This will hopefully make sure that they can have a good start into their studies and student life.
This is especially important during the current Corona-pandemic, as there are far fewer opportunities to get to know people during the orientation week or the pre-course. Presumably, many things won’t work as normal, which will likely lead to more problems than usual.
The mentors will serve as a contact who can help the new students with questions they may have, or at least know whom to ask that might know. The mentors will generally be students in a higher semester of the same course. As such they will most of the problems and can put themselves in the freshmen’s shoes. No question will be “unnecessary” or “stupid”. The mentors have presumably had the same problems…
Besides the mentor there will be other group members from the same course of studies with whom the students can spend time. They might, within the current hygiene and distancing rules, meet up, talk or text. This will remain open. The program serves as an aid for the freshmen to get to know each other and to get comfortable as a student.
All mentors will be volunteers.
Simple answer: in principle for everyone in the first semester of a physics related course of studies. Regardless of whether you study Physics, EP or PTM, you can sign up. We will look for groups from your course of studies. The program is especially recommended in the coming winter semester 2020/21, as it will be more complicated than usual anyway, due to the Corona-pandemic. Generally speaking, this will also be useful for people who aren’t very good at getting to know new people.
No, the number of participants is not limited. Feel free to sign up.
As a mentor you must be a student at the department of physics. As such you should be enrolled in at least the second bachelor’s semester of a physics related course. Furthermore, you should know your way around campus life, though this might be a given from the second semester onwards. You can look after a group either alone or in pairs (given enough mentors) Your mentees will generally be in the same course of studies as you are. As such you will know your way around the subject matter as well.
Generally speaking, you should be supportive and open minded. You should be interested in showing new students what university life’s like. On the other hand, you must not be worried, as there will always be someone in the student council you can consult. You do not need to be able to answer all questions. There will be no other requirements. The details will be left to be decided by you and your group.
We expect to have a meeting before the start of the program to discuss organisational matters. A training as such will not take place, as you already bring all requirements to the table, as you are a student already. We will discuss a time and date for this meeting via email.
Being a mentor is voluntary. Unfortunately, we cannot offer financial compensation.
You will however get a lot of interesting experiences and will be a great help to the new students. You would probably have been happy to have a mentor on your side when you started your studies. Especially during the Corona-pandemic getting to know new people is very hard. Let us help to give new students a good start to their studies anyway.
