abstract = {Modern driver assistance systems make increasing use of auditory and tactile signals in order to reduce the driver's visual information load. This entails potential crossmodal interaction effects that need to be taken into account in designing an optimal system. Here we show that saccadic reaction times to visual targets (cockpit or outside mirror), presented in a driving simulator environment and accompanied by auditory or tactile accessories, follow some well-known spatiotemporal rules of multisensory integration, usually found under confined laboratory conditions. Auditory nontargets speed up reaction time by about 80 ms. The effect tends to be maximal when the nontarget is presented 50 ms before the target and when target and nontarget are spatially coincident. The effect of a tactile nontarget (vibrating steering wheel) was less pronounced and not spatially specific. It is shown that the average reaction times are well-described by the stochastic “time window of integration” model for multisensory integration developed by the authors. This two-stage model postulates that crossmodal interaction occurs only if the peripheral processes from the different sensory modalities terminate within a fixed temporal interval, and that the amount of crossmodal interaction manifests itself in an increase or decrease of second stage processing time. A qualitative test is consistent with the model prediction that the probability of interaction, but not the amount of crossmodal interaction, depends on target–nontarget onset asynchrony. A quantitative model fit yields estimates of individual participants' parameters, including the size of the time window. Some consequences for the design of driver assistance systems are discussed.

abstract = {Developing assistance systems in the automotive domain involves several exploration and evaluation activities with potential users of the system. To replace the amount of human test subject involvement, executable models reproducing human behaviour are introduced. Together with models of the car, road, surrounding traffic and of course the assistance system, a complete representation of the assistance system in its application environment can then be constructed which may be used to predict effects of introducing the assistance without having to resort to experiments with humans. In this paper we present techniques concerned with the exploration of the behaviour spectrum of the combined models. We show how functionality and safety aspects of assisted driving can be evaluated in computer simulations already during early phases of the development process.} } - [inproceedings] bibtexM. Here we demonstrate that measuring multisensory performance using either {RT} or {DR} alone misses out on important information. We suggest an integration of {RT} and {DR} into a single measure of multisensory performance: the first index ({MRE}*) is based on an arithmetic combination of {RT} and {DR},
the second ({MPE}) is constructed from parameters derived from fitting a sequential sampling model to {RT} and {DR} data simultaneously. Our approach is illustrated by data from two audio–visual experiments. In the first, a redundant targets detection experiment using stimuli of different intensity, both measures yield similar pattern of results supporting the principle of inverse effectiveness . The second experiment, introducing stimulus onset asynchrony and differing instructions (focused attention vs. redundant targets task) further supports the usefulness of both indices. Statistical properties of both measures are investigated via bootstrapping procedures.},

abstract = {The goal of our approach is the model-based prediction of the effects of driver assistance systems. Starting with the integration of a computer model of the driver of a car into a simulation environment, we face the problem of analysing the emergent effects of a complex system with discrete, numeric and probabilistic components. In particular, it is difficult to assess the probability of rare events, though we are specifically interested in critical situations which will be infrequent for any reasonable system. For that purpose, we use a quantitative logic which enables us to specify criticality and other properties of simulation runs. An online evaluation of the logic permits us to define a procedure which guides the simulation towards critical situations and allows to estimate the risk of connected with the introduction of the assistance system.} } - [inproceedings] bibtexM. abstract = {We address the problem of online prediction of future temporal properties of open continuous systems based on time series obtained from online measurements. The objective is, given a partial time series stating (possibly inexact) measurements of observable variables of the system, to safely predict the truth value of a linear-time temporal-logic formula including future modalities, and to do so in real-time while the system is evolving. While this can in principle be done using techniques from hybrid-system model checking, these algorithms are computationally by far too expensive to support online prediction in real-time. As a computationally tractable alternative, we suggest an approach decomposing hybrid model-checking into an offline and an online phase, where the offline phase precomputes all computationally expensive entities, in particular those involving forms of branching, while the online part exploits these precomputed properties in a branching-free analysis based on computationally inexpensive interval constraint propagation. The procedure is designed for system-in-the-loop testing or similar use cases requiring real-time monitoring of dynamic processes with respect to temporal properties at moderately high sampling frequencies.} } - [inproceedings] bibtex |
