We start with a definition of sociotechnical systems and processes, and present a modelling method that focuses on sociotechnical relationships. This serves as a basis to demonstrate how socio-technical concepts can be inspected, discussed and revised by walkthrough methods that pursue an approach of agile design. The formative evaluation of socio-technical concepts can be supported by heuristics. We explain how usability heuristics can be extended for the purpose of sociotechnical evaluation. Therefore we extract aspects of evaluation from the areas of CSCW, process design, privacy, job re-design as well as principle of the socio-technical design process. This analysis leads to eight sociotechnical heuristics that address: visibility, flexibility, information exchange, human communication, balance between effort and benefit, compatibility, efficiency, and technical support.
